<p>The <strong>abductor hallucis</strong> (also <strong>abductor hallucis muscle</strong>, latin: <strong><em>musculus abductor hallucis</em></strong>) is a muscle of the sole of the foot located in the superficial layer of the medial muscle group or the muscles of the big toe. The <strong>abductor hallucis</strong> aids in abducting the big toe.</p><h3><strong>Origin</strong></h3><p>The <strong>abductor longus</strong> originates from the calcaneal tuberosity of the calcaneus bone.</p><h3><strong>Insertion</strong></h3><p>The <strong>abductor hallucis</strong> inserts at the proximal phalanx of the first digit of the foot (hallux or big toe).</p><h3><strong>Action</strong></h3><p>The main function of the <strong>abductor hallucis</strong> is abduction of the big toe, but it also participates in flexion of the big toe.</p><h3><strong>Innervation</strong></h3><p>The&amp;nbsp;<strong>abductor hallucis</strong>&amp;nbsp;is innervated by the medial plantar nerve, one of the terminal branches of the tibial nerve.</p>
