Deep plantar artery

The deep plantar artery (also called communicating artery, Latin: arteria plantaris profunda) is a branch of the dorsalis pedis artery. It supplies the 1st toe (big toe) and 2nd toe of the foot.

The deep plantar artery penetrates the foot between the first and second metatarsal bones, and anastomose with the terminal branch of the plantar arch. On its course, the artery gives off the 1st dorsal metatarsal artery that divides into three dorsal digital arteries.
