Interphalangeal joints of foot

The interphalangeal joints of the foot (Latin: articulationes interphalangeae pedis) are synovial hinge type articulations located in the foot. These joints are formed between the phalanges of the toes.

Articulating structures

Within each interphalangeal joint articulates:

  • Base of the phalanx
  • Head of the phalanx

Joint capsule and ligaments

Each interphalangeal joint has a fibrous joint capsule. These articulations are reinforced by the following two types of ligaments:

  • Collateral ligaments - rounded bands, located on either side of each joint;
  • Plantar ligaments - placed on the plantar surface of the joint between the collateral ligaments.

Movements of interphalangeal joints

The range of movements permitted by the interphalangeal joints are limited, and they include the following:

  • Flexion and extension of the medial and distal phalanges
