Mylohyoid

The mylohyoid (also mylohyoid muscle, latin: musculus mylohyoideus) is a paired muscle belonging to the suprahyoid muscles of the neck that extends from the mandible to the hyoid bone.

Besides moving the hyoid bone, the mylohyoid also participates in forming the oral diaphragm.

Origin

The mylohyoid originates from the mylohyoid line on the internal surface of the mandible.

Insertion

The mylohyoid inserts onto the body of the hyoid bone.

Action

Contractions of the mylohyoid muscle draw the hyoid forward and upward.

Innervation

The mylohyoid is innervated by the mylohyoid nerve, a branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (CN V3).
