Vastus medialis

The vastus medialis (also vastus medialis muscle, vastus internus, teardrop muscle, latin: musculus vastus medialis) is one of the quadriceps femoris muscles, located medially in the anterior compartment of the thigh.

Origin

The vastus medialis originates from the medial (inner) lip of linea aspera.

Insertion

The vastus medialis inserts along with the other muscles of the quadriceps femoris onto the tibial tuberosity.

Action

The main function of the vastus medialis is aiding in extension of the knee.

Innervation

The vastus medialis is innervated by the femoral nerve.
