Inferior gluteal nerve

The inferior gluteal nerve (latin: nervus gluteus inferior) is a mixed nerve that originates from the sacral plexus and innervates the gluteus maximus and the hip joint. The inferior gluteal nerve contains mostly motor but also sensory fibers.

The inferior gluteal nerve arises from the ventral branches of the fifth lumbar (L5) and the first and second sacral (S1 - S2) nerves.

The inferior gluteal nerve runs through the infrapiriform foramen. It is accompanied by the inferior gluteal artery.

The motor fibers of the inferior gluteal nerve innervate the gluteus maximus, while the sensory fibers of the inferior gluteal nerve innervate the hip joint.
